On the morning of April 5th, a new round of negotiations opened in Almaty, Kazakhstan, between the P5+1 group (comprising the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: Russia, China, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, along with Germany) and Iran, aimed at finding a solution to Tehran's nuclear program.

Participating in this round of negotiations were the European Union's High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy, Catherine Ashton; the Secretary of the Supreme Security Council of Iran, Saeed Jalili; and diplomatic representatives from the P5+1 group. Russia and the United States sent Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and Deputy Foreign Minister Wendi Sherman, respectively.

At the previous round of negotiations, also held in Al-Matu on February 26-27, the P5+1 group proposed that Iran limit its nuclear enrichment activities to below 20% in exchange for the international community easing economic sanctions against Tehran.

At this round of negotiations, representatives of the 5+1 group want a concrete and constructive response from Iran to the above proposal. EU High Commissioner Ashton stated that she hopes for a positive response from Iran and a concrete outcome from this round of talks.

Meanwhile, Iranian Supreme Security Council Secretary Jalili stated that Iran wants international recognition of its right to enrich uranium as well as its right to conduct nuclear research for peaceful purposes.

Against this backdrop, public opinion suggests that at the latest round of negotiations in Almaty, the P5+1 group and Iran are unlikely to reach an agreement that would mutually accept Tehran limiting or halting its controversial nuclear program.
