This summer-autumn crop, Yen Thanh planted 12,667 hectares, of which the area that is often flooded is about 2,500 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Nhan Thanh, Long Thanh, Khanh Thanh, Bao Thanh, Nam Thanh... According to Mr. Nguyen Van Duong - Head of Yen Thanh Agriculture Department, to avoid flooding and damage to rice, from the beginning of the crop, the district has required the communes to seriously sow and plant according to the crop schedule, and structure short-term rice varieties on flooded areas such as: P6 mutant, Viet Lai 20, AD1... The district has directed the communes to urgently harvest summer-autumn rice to avoid flooding, and harvest when the rice is about 85% ripe. Yen Thanh has harvested over 65% of the area, and over 80% of the flooded area of over 2,500 hectares has been harvested. All communes have hired harvesters, so the harvest has been accelerated, and it is expected that Yen Thanh will finish harvesting the summer-autumn crop from September 6 to 8.
Taking advantage of favorable weather, in Dien Thai commune (Dien Chau), people are actively harvesting rice in low-lying areas to avoid flooding. Mr. Nguyen Tuan is harvesting rice in Roc Troi field and said: "My family grows 4 sao of rice. Previously, we waited for the rice to fully ripen before harvesting, but it was often flooded and almost lost everything. Learning from experience, now we have harvested over 75% of the rice." Mr. Dinh Viet Truong - Chairman of Dien Thai Commune People's Committee shared: The commune is located in a low-lying area, close to the drainage canals of Vach Nam and Roc Troi. Of the 374 hectares of rice, over 70% is in low-lying areas. The commune is directing strongly, mobilizing people to harvest over 50% of the area in low-lying areas. It is expected that by the end of September 5, the commune will harvest all. In addition, many low-lying communes of the district such as Dien Dong, Dien Nguyen, Dien Xuan ... people are renting rice harvesters, urgently harvesting to avoid flooding. This summer-autumn crop, Dien Chau has planted over 9,000 hectares, the flooded area is about 2,000 hectares, most of which are being actively harvested by people, reaching over 40% of the area. It is expected that Dien Chau will finish the summer-autumn harvest around September 10. In addition to speeding up the harvest, if there is heavy rain, in some areas, the district also directs communes to close all sluice gates, check and repair dikes, banks and fields to prevent floods, and encourage people to harvest the remaining rice fields according to the motto "green at home is better than old in the fields".
Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: This summer-autumn crop, the whole province planted over 59,000 hectares, to avoid floods, for the flood-prone area of over 20,000 hectares, the Department prioritizes the use of extremely short-lived varieties such as P6 mutant or other varieties with a growing period of approximately 100 days such as pure rice: VS1, glutinous rice 352, PC6, RVT and AD1 (technically advanced varieties). Hybrid rice includes: Viet Lai 20, Viet Lai 24, Thien Nguyen Uu 16, LC270. With the motto "green at home is better than old in the field", at this time the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested localities and urged communes to harvest summer-autumn rice quickly to avoid floods. This summer-autumn crop, most localities rented combine harvesters, so the harvest progress has been accelerated. According to the assessment, this summer-autumn crop is relatively even, with an expected average yield of 46 quintals/ha, an increase of 1 quintal/ha compared to the previous crop.
Currently, the flooded areas are concentrated in the districts of Yen Thanh, Dien Chau, Quynh Luu, Do Luong, Hung Nguyen, Nam Dan, Nghi Loc, people have harvested about 10,000 hectares of rice. However, the difficulty for the districts of Nam Dan, Nghi Loc, Hung Nguyen is that there are about 10,000 hectares of flooded rice, the rice ripens 10-15 days later than in Yen Thanh, so the risk of crop failure due to waterlogging is very high. The reason for the slow ripening of the rice in the above 3 districts is that the technical solutions have not been met. According to the direction of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, from the beginning of the season, the flooded districts need to plant rice seedlings early, 1 week before the spring rice harvest. However, most of the above 3 districts have finished harvesting the spring rice before planting rice seedlings. In case of floods, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requires localities to focus on all measures, effectively operate irrigation works, clear canals, ditches, etc. to promptly drain water from flooded rice fields. According to the current progress, it is expected that around September 15, the whole province will finish harvesting the summer-autumn crop.
