Inauguration of Paris Agreement Square in France
The Paris Agreement Square and the Peace Symbol Column, honoring the Vietnamese people's persistent will to fight for peace, have just been inaugurated in the city of Choisy-Le-Roi, a suburb of Paris, France.
The above event, part of the week of activities commemorating the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam, took place on the afternoon of March 23 (local time, or the morning of March 24 Hanoi time) in the city center of Choisy-Le-Roi.
The inauguration ceremony was organized by the Choisy-Le-Roi city government in coordination with the Vietnamese Embassy in France.
Ambassador Duong Chi Dung speaks at the Inauguration Ceremony. On the right is the Peace Symbol column.
The Peace Column, designed by French artist Dominique Miscault, uses modern sculptural language and is made of spray paint on shaped iron to avoid fading over time.
This symbol bears the special mark of the solidarity and friendship between Choisy-Le-Roi and Hanoi as well as between France and Vietnam.
At the foot of the symbolic column is a stone stele with the inscription: "From 1968 to 1973, Choisy-Le-Roi welcomed the delegation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam to negotiate and sign the Paris Agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam, January 27, 1973. Choisy-Le-Roi was honored to contribute to peace."
Delegates read the content engraved on the stone stele at the foot of the Peace Symbol column.
Attending the ceremony were Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, former Vice President, former Head of the Negotiation Delegation of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam; Vietnamese Ambassador to France Duong Chi Dung; Mayor and First Deputy Mayor of Choisy-Le-Roi city, Daniel Davisse and Jean-Joel Lemarchand; leaders of the France-Vietnam Friendship Association of Choisy-Le-Roi city, along with representatives of many friendship and solidarity organizations with Vietnam, the Association of Vietnamese in France (UGVF), the Vietnam Cultural Center and representative agencies in France.
The delegation of the People's Committee of Dong Da District, Hanoi, led by Chairman Nguyen Song Hao, the twinned unit of Choisy-Le-Roi city, who is visiting and working in Paris, was also present at the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, former Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh was moved to say that the square named after the Paris Agreement and the Peace Symbol column were placed right on the street named after Mr. Louis Luc, former Mayor of this city and also the late husband of Mrs. Hélène Luc, Member of the National Assembly of Val-de-Marne, member of the French Communist Party from 1968 to 1973, who had given special affection and support to the Vietnamese delegations during the 5 years of negotiations leading to the signing of the historic Paris Agreement.
Former Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh expressed that after 40 years of returning here, she still lives in the warm, friendly, comradely and loyal atmosphere of the leaders and people of Choisy-Le-Roi city.
She highly appreciated the effective and selfless support and assistance and the sincere and precious feelings that the people of this city as well as the French state and people have given to Vietnam.
According to her, those things have contributed to helping Vietnam achieve its noble goal of peace, independence and national unification.
Ambassador Duong Chi Dung also expressed his emotion and joy at attending the inauguration ceremony. According to the Ambassador, this is a “symbol of the desire for peace” and also a “vivid expression contributing to embellishing the history of solidarity, friendship and cooperation between the people of Vietnam and France in general and between Choisy-Le-Roi and Vietnam in particular.”
The Ambassador expressed his sincere thanks to the Mayor, the city's leaders and people, especially Ms. Dominique Miscault, for this noble idea.
Artist Dominique Miscault said that in preparation for the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement in Vietnam and at the request of the City Mayor, she came up with the idea of designing the Peace Symbol Column. According to her, this is a symbol of the persistent will to fight for peace of the Vietnamese people and the world.
For his part, City Mayor Daniel Davisse highlighted the “important commemorative and remembrance significance” of the symbol not only for the present but also for the future, a symbol that always reminds us in the fight for human peace and human conscience.
In a very figurative way, Mr. Daniel Davisse said that the Paris Agreement Square and the Symbol for Peace are located right next to the Seine River - the river that will bring endless water and life to the traditional and good relationship of cooperation, solidarity, friendship between the city of Choisy-Le-Roi and Dong Da, Hanoi as well as between the French and Vietnamese people.
To conclude the week commemorating the signing of the Paris Agreement, on March 26, this city will also hold an exhibition of ceramic paintings by artist Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of Tan Ha Noi Arts Company.
The exhibition will display a unique large-scale ceramic mosaic painting, with 4,000 pieces arranged by the artist herself on fire-web ceramic to help the photos mounted on it last forever.
