Inauguration of the Cambodia - Vietnam Martyrs' Monument
According to a VNA reporter in Cambodia, on the morning of December 9, in Stung Treng town, Stung Treng province, the northeasternmost locality of Cambodia, the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense and the Stung Treng provincial government solemnly inaugurated the Cambodia-Vietnam Martyrs' Memorial (1979-1989).
This is a project to pay tribute to the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who helped Cambodia escape the Khmer Rouge genocide.

Attending the ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister of the Royal Government, Minister of National Defense of Cambodia, General Tea Banh; Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army, General Pon Saruon; representatives of government leaders and many representatives of the people of Stung Treng province.
Representatives of the Vietnamese Defense Attaché in Cambodia, representatives of the leadership of Army Corps 15, Vietnam Ministry of National Defense; representatives of Military Region 5 Command and Gia Lai provincial government attended the ceremony.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Tea Banh highly appreciated the efforts of the Stung Treng provincial government in completing the Cambodia-Vietnam Martyrs' Memorial, paying tribute to the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the 1979-1989 period for the survival of the Khmer people, for the peaceful and prosperous Cambodia of today.
On behalf of the Cambodian Government, army and people, General Tea Banh expressed his deep gratitude for the wholehearted assistance of the Vietnamese Government, army and people in the struggle for national independence and the later development of Cambodia.
Recalling the history of Cambodia in the early 70s of the last century, General Tea Banh affirmed the great role of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers - helping the Cambodian people overthrow the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime and standing side by side with the Cambodian army to prevent the return of the genocidal regime in the period 1979-1989.
General Tea Banh emphasized that on the basis of the good traditional solidarity and cooperation relationship between the two countries, built with the blood of heroic martyrs, in the coming time, the Cambodian army will continue to promote cooperation activities with the Vietnamese army to protect and develop the country, for peace and the interests of the people of the two countries.
Besides, the authorities and people of localities along the Vietnam border also need to continue promoting cooperation activities in many fields, together building a peaceful, stable and prosperous border.
Speaking at the ceremony, Major General Dang Anh Dung, Commander of the 15th Corps, said that the Cambodia-Vietnam Martyrs Memorial in the period 1979-1989 is a gift contributed from the affection and efforts of all officers, soldiers, workers and employees of the Corps, contributing a small part to furthering the friendship between the two countries and the two armies, and to pay tribute to and commemorate the heroic martyrs.
Major General Dang Anh Dung said that the Vietnamese and Cambodian peoples as well as the two countries' armies were closely linked in the struggle for national liberation and independence and freedom for the Fatherland.
Tens of thousands of outstanding peoples of the two nations have bravely sacrificed for that great cause. Today, the two nations and their armies are and continue to be closely linked in the loyal friendship and good neighborliness to build and protect the increasingly prosperous Fatherland.
The Cambodia-Vietnam Martyrs Memorial 1979-1989 was built on a hill, near the center of Stung Treng provincial capital, with a total area of 5,000 square meters. The memorial tower is 11 meters high, with an area of over 20 square meters, with a group of statues of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers standing side by side with Cambodian soldiers to protect two Cambodian children. The cost of building the monument was supported by the 15th Army Corps, Vietnam Ministry of National Defense.
