As reported by VietNamNet, patient Le Thi Anh P. (41 years old, residing in Hamlet 10, Trinh Phu Commune, Ke Sach District, Soc Trang Province) was admitted to the hospital at noon on May 6 with abdominal pain.
At about 6:00 p.m. the same day, doctors at Can Tho Central General Hospital examined and ordered laparoscopic appendectomy for Ms. P.
However, during the surgery, the doctor did not remove the appendix but arbitrarily removed all of Ms. P's ovaries.
When the doctor informed the patient about removing both ovaries, the patient's relatives were extremely angry.
Admitting procedural errors
On May 10, according to a source, Can Tho Central General Hospital announced initial information before the surgery on patient Le Thi Anh P.
Specifically, Ms. P. was admitted to the hospital at 10:20 a.m. on May 6, in a state of consciousness, with pale pink mucous membranes, dry lips, and a soft abdomen with resistance to palpation in the right iliac fossa and hypogastric region...
Ms. P. was treated by doctors of the General Surgery Department with laparoscopic surgery to examine and treat the injury. When the endoscope was inserted into her abdomen, it was discovered that her appendix was normal and uninjured. However, the doctors discovered that both ovaries were necrotic, and that her abdominal cavity contained a lot of cloudy fluid and pseudomembranes.
Doctors in the Obstetrics Department decided to switch from laparoscopic surgery to open surgery to remove both necrotic ovaries and bilateral fallopian tubes.
“Actually, before deciding to remove both ovaries, the obstetrician should have met with the family to explain the change in method, which is not to remove the appendix but to remove both ovaries. From there, the family would understand and agree to the surgery to remove both ovaries. But the doctor said he went to find but could not meet the family to explain before removing both ovaries” – the hospital reported after the family reacted.
The hospital also admitted that the doctor's failure to explain to the family before performing surgery to remove the two necrotic ovaries was not in accordance with hospital procedures and regulations.
Secret agreement?
On the afternoon of May 10, in contact with reporters, Mr. Giang (43 years old, Ms. P.'s husband) said that he was the one who directly signed the certificate of appendectomy for his wife.
While Ms. P. was undergoing surgery, her family stood outside the operating room but no doctor announced that they would be performing an ovarian cyst surgery.
At the hospital bed, Ms. P. said that her health had stabilized, she had less pain than a few days ago and could sleep better at night.
When asked about the compensation issue to determine that the hospital doctors who performed surgery to remove Ms. P.'s 2 ovaries were due to a tumor, Mr. Giang's mother said: "I don't know, this matter will be resolved by the in-laws and P.'s 3 younger brothers-in-law with the hospital. We are from the countryside, when the doctor said the appendix was healthy, but when they opened it, they said there was pus, uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts."
According to a source, four doctors involved in the incident had to write a report. They are Mr. Hong Quoc Thich, Ms. Le Thi Thu Van (Obstetrics), Mr. Bui Phi Hung and Khuu Vu Lam (Surgery).
