The project “Drainage and Flood Control in Medium-sized Urban Areas in Coastal Region of Vietnam” will be implemented in the period 2013-2017, with the aim of enhancing the capacity of relevant agencies and communities to respond to urban flooding in the current context of climate change.

The above information was announced by Mr. Nguyen Hong Tien - Director of the Department of Technical Infrastructure (Ministry of Construction) at the launching workshop "Managing natural disaster risks and urban flooding in the context of climate change in Vietnam" organized by the Department of Technical Infrastructure in coordination with the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ) on the afternoon of September 6, in Hanoi.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Tien, the coastal cities in the Central region are the cities most affected by the phenomenon of rising sea levels accompanied by heavy rains with increasing frequency. Therefore, the project "Drainage and Flood Control for Medium-sized Urban Areas in the Coastal Region of Vietnam" will be implemented according to the set planning objectives, contributing to improving the environment of the cities, reducing flooding and minimizing the impact of climate change.

Accordingly, the project will operate in 5 central coastal provinces including Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Soc Trang, Quang Ngai, Nha Trang with the following contents: Building a policy system related to climate change including action plans to respond to climate change; Developing a master plan on drainage; Developing a flood emergency response plan and an early warning system.

To achieve the project's objectives, the German Development Cooperation Agency will cooperate with the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the provinces in the project./.
