From now until 2020 and 2030, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development intends not to build any more coffee processing plants, but instead to invest in technological and equipment upgrades to increase labor productivity and improve product quality.

According to Mr. Vo Thanh Do, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural, Forestry, and Fisheries Processing and Salt Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), there are currently 239 industrial-scale coffee processing enterprises nationwide.

These facilities process over 1.24 million tons of products annually, including green coffee beans, ground coffee, and instant coffee, accounting for over 96% of the country's total coffee production.

According to Mr. Vo Thanh Do's assessment, Vietnam is currently the world's leading producer and exporter of robusta coffee, and the second largest producer and exporter of green coffee beans.

However, the coffee processing industry has long focused primarily on processing green coffee beans for export, resulting in low added value. Deep processing into products such as ground coffee, instant coffee, and blended instant coffee (such as "3-in-1" or "2-in-1" coffee) only accounts for 4.1-6% of total coffee production.

Specifically, currently, the whole country has 160 facilities processing ground coffee (roasted and ground coffee), with a capacity of 26,095 tons per year, and 19 factories processing pure instant coffee and blended instant coffee, with a capacity of 75,280 tons of product per year.

Meanwhile, although processed coffee products have lower production volumes, they generate significantly higher added value compared to exporting green coffee beans.

From now until 2020 and 2030, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development intends not to build any more coffee processing plants, but instead to invest in technological and equipment upgrades to increase labor productivity and improve product quality.

At the same time, focus should be placed on investing in research to change the product structure towards increasing the production of deeply processed, high-quality coffee products; and strengthening the links between coffee growers and processing businesses to create sustainable development.

Specifically, by 2020, the proportion of coffee consumed (deeply processed coffee: roasted and ground coffee, instant coffee) will reach 25% or more of the total green coffee bean production; of which, roasted and ground coffee production will reach 50,000 tons/year, and instant coffee of all types will reach 255,000 tons/year; of which, pure instant coffee will account for over 20%.

By 2030, the industry aims to increase roasted and ground coffee production to over 50,000 tons per year, and instant coffee production to over 350,000 tons per year.

Roasted and ground coffee is primarily for the domestic market, while instant coffee is for export and partly for domestic consumption.
