Curbing the increase in prostitution, drug addiction, HIV infection

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of January 10, the National Committee for AIDS, Drug and Prostitution Prevention and Control held a national online conference to review the work of AIDS, drug and prostitution prevention and control in 2013 and deploy tasks for 2014.

Comrade Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Politburo member, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Committee for AIDS, Drug and Prostitution Prevention and Control chaired the conference. In 2013, under the strong direction of the National Committee for AIDS, Drug and Prostitution Prevention and Control, and the active participation of all sectors and levels, the work of AIDS, drug and prostitution prevention and control was promoted and achieved many important results. The combined strength of the entire political system and the entire population was mobilized to participate in the prevention of HIV/AIDS and social evils. Many propaganda and prevention solutions were implemented, creating positive changes at the grassroots level; Many transnational drug crime gangs and large prostitution rings were dismantled, the model of treating drug addiction with Methadone as a substitute for drugs was initially effective... Since then, the increase in drug crimes and drug users has been curbed, the increase in new HIV infections has been slowed down, prostitution has been controlled, contributing to protecting the peaceful life of the people.

In addition to the achieved results, the situation of drug crimes, prostitution, HIV/AIDS is still complicated, especially the situation of human trafficking for prostitution is an alarming issue; drug crimes have increased in number of cases, scale and number of subjects.

In Nghe An alone, in 2013, 764 drug-related cases were discovered and arrested, 6,768 drug addicts were recorded and managed, the total number of people infected with HIV detected as of November 31, 2013 was 7,234, of which the number of people infected through drug injection accounted for nearly 84.71%.

Concluding the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc requested: In 2014, ministries, branches, and Steering Committees for AIDS, drug and prostitution prevention and control in provinces and cities continue to promote propaganda and education to raise public awareness, mobilize the entire political system, society and community to participate in AIDS, drug and prostitution prevention and control; replicate models and examples of drug prevention and control; resolutely fight against drug trafficking, strictly manage prostitution in the new situation; At the same time, continue to implement measures to control HIV infection and new drug addiction./.
