Sword of the Dragon is set in the Western Han Dynasty, revolving around the story of General Huo An (played by Jackie Chan) with the mission of protecting the peace of the tribes that interact on the Silk Road.
As a legendary general, with a great reputation and a love for peace, Huo An joined forces with his brothers who had fought and died with him to form the “Death for Peace” alliance. However, loyal people often encounter jealousy and envy. He was harmed by treacherous officials, exiled to the border and subjected to harsh slavery.
Fortunately, Huo An was joined by the Roman General Lucius (John Cusack) on his way to escort the prince to the East from the tyrant Tiberius (Adrien Brody). From here, the two heroic generals bonded as soul mates, sharing the same ideals of defending justice and building peace. They joined forces with Lucius and the 36-tribe army, and Huo An was determined to protect the Silk Road from the wild hooves of the Roman army led by Tiberius.
Although it is a period martial arts film, revolving around fierce generals on the battlefield, Dragon Sword is not a pure action film. Martial arts are not the highlight of the film. The film delves into the unique cultural features of the barbarian tribes that are the foundation for many great nations later on such as Korea, Japan, India, Persia, etc. Each cultural region is represented by a few characters with their own costumes, flags and personalities. Perhaps because of that, the film will be a bit spread out for audiences who are fans of action films.
