Overseas Vietnamese do not need to register to keep Vietnamese nationality

With the Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Vietnamese Nationality passed this morning, June 24, Vietnamese people residing abroad will not need to register to retain Vietnamese nationality.

The Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Vietnamese Nationality takes effect immediately from the date of promulgation.

One of the most notable points is that the Law stipulates that people with Vietnamese nationality include people who have Vietnamese nationality up to the effective date of this Law and people who have Vietnamese nationality according to the provisions of this Law.

Vietnamese people residing abroad who have not lost their Vietnamese nationality according to the provisions of Vietnamese law before the effective date of this Law still retain Vietnamese nationality.

At the same time, to facilitate overseas Vietnamese, the law allows Vietnamese people residing abroad who have not lost their Vietnamese nationality but do not have documents proving their Vietnamese nationality to register with Vietnamese representative agencies abroad to be identified as having Vietnamese nationality and issued a Vietnamese passport.

The new provisions of the Law have affirmed the consistent policy of the Party and State towards overseas Vietnamese as stipulated in Article 18 of the Constitution and Article 7 of the Law on Vietnamese Nationality; identifying this as an inseparable part of the Vietnamese ethnic community, always encouraging and creating conditions for overseas Vietnamese to maintain close ties with their families and homeland, contributing to the construction of their homeland and country.

The above amendments and supplements will also be linked to existing regulations on documents proving Vietnamese nationality, without creating any new documents or procedures.
