Under the education reform program introduced by Mr. Kim in 2013, English is a compulsory second language from grades 4 to 12/12, South Korea's Newsis newspaper reported yesterday.
Over the eight years, students will complete 787 hours of English language instruction, covering all skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. It is worth noting that in the document, the language is referred to as “English”, not “foreign language” as before.
Also under the new education program, primary school was extended by one year, and middle and high schools were also separated. The reform was carried out a year after Mr. Kim became the leader of North Korea.
Cho Jung-ah, a senior fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said all schools in North Korea must adhere to the educational platform set by Mr. Kim.
