Import turnover of many raw materials increased sharply

According to the General Statistics Office, import turnover in the first two months of the year reached 15.9 billion USD, an increase of 11.8% over the same period last year; in which the turnover of many imported raw materials increased sharply.

Among the items with import turnover increasing sharply compared to the same period last year, electronics, computers and components reached 1.7 billion USD, up 101.4%; iron and steel reached 960 million USD, up 16.6%; chemicals reached 417 million USD, up 22.2%; wood and wood materials reached 216 million USD, up 64.7%.

Other imported raw materials recorded single-digit increases in turnover in the first two months of the year, including machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts reaching 2.3 billion USD, up 4.2%; fabrics reaching 882 million USD, up 4.5%; plastics reaching 707 million USD, up 9.2%; textile, garment, and footwear materials reaching 387 million USD, up 9.8%.

Import turnover in the first two months of the year increased mainly due to the increase in import volume and average unit price of some imported goods; of which iron and steel prices increased by 1.4%, fertilizer prices increased by 15.4%, and gasoline prices increased by 18.5%.

Trade deficit in the first two months of 2012 is estimated at 628 million USD, equal to 4.1% of total export turnover.

In the total import turnover in the first two months of 2012, the domestic economic sectorreached 7.7 billion USD, down 6.4%; foreign invested sector reached 8.2 billion USD, up 36.8%.

According to the General Statistics Office, import turnover in February is estimated to reach 9 billion USD, up 30% over the previous month and up 47% over the same period in 2011.
