Export turnover of agricultural, forestry, fishery and wooden products reached 27.5 billion USD and in 2012, agriculture had a trade surplus of 9.2 billion USD.
On the morning of December 28, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held an online conference to summarize the implementation of the 2012 plan and deploy the agricultural sector's plan for 2013.
According to the data announced at the conference, the total rice output of the country in 2012 reached 43.7 million tons (an increase of 1.3 million tons compared to 2011), continuing to be the year with the highest rice output ever, firmly ensuring national food security. In 2012, despite continuing to be affected by the general difficulties of the domestic and world economy, livestock production continued to face many difficulties: prices of Vietnam's main agricultural export products fell sharply (rice, coffee, rubber...), of which rubber fell the most sharply by 34%, epidemics, unusual weather...
Due to the drastic management measures of the Government, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities have implemented disease prevention measures, production support policies, and encouraged the development of industrial livestock production... Thanks to that, Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery output continued to increase significantly compared to 2011. The total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products, wood and wooden products continued to increase, estimated at 27.5 billion USD (up 9.7% compared to 2011), with a trade surplus of 9.2 billion USD, contributing to reducing the country's trade deficit. Export turnover of agricultural products reached 15 billion USD, aquatic products 6.15 billion USD, wooden products and forestry products reached 5 billion USD, of which 3 products reached turnover of 3 billion USD or more: rice, coffee, wooden products, 5 products reached turnover of over 1 billion USD including: rubber (2.8 billion USD), tra fish, shrimp, cashew nuts, cassava and cassava products.
Agricultural exports reached record numbers; rice (8 million tons), coffee, cashew nuts, making Vietnam surpass Thailand for the first time in rice export output. With coffee export output reaching 1.7 million tons, Vietnam surpassed Brazil to become the world's largest coffee exporter, while Vietnam's cashew nuts alone maintained the "number 1" position in the world. With the growth momentum and trade surplus of the agricultural sector in 2012, it continued to contribute significantly to the growth of the entire Vietnamese economy.
