(Baonghean) - Mrs. Hai's family (Hamlet 2, Van Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh) always has two buffaloes, more than 10 pigs and a flock of chickens and ducks in the barn. In recent years, combining traditional folk methods, plus training from veterinary staff, she often uses medicinal herbs in the garden to both prevent cold and prevent and treat simple diseases for her family's livestock.

Mr. Pham Tuan Hai - Deputy Head of Yen Thanh District Veterinary Station said: In recent years, the movement of using traditional medicinal herbs in livestock farming has developed quite strongly in Yen Thanh. Originating from the habit of using garlic to treat common diseases in livestock, in 2008, the Station coordinated with the district Radio and Television Station to carry out a propaganda program, mobilizing people to use traditional medicinal herbs available in their gardens such as garlic, lemongrass leaves, eucalyptus, eucalyptus oil, great compassion leaves, chives, soapberry, and basil to prevent cold and diseases in livestock.

Every time the weather turns cold, there is a monsoon, and it is freezing, people use these leaves, burn them right at the door or corner of the barn, fumigate and fan the smoke into the barn, then use the dried residue to spread around the barn. This method is especially effective for ducks, because in addition to repelling insects, flies and mosquitoes that transmit diseases, it also repels snakes, which are animals that ducks are very afraid of.

Mr. Hai said that from folk experience and through practice, this simple measure can both prevent poisonous winds, cure some common diseases such as flu, and also increase the resistance of livestock by eliminating toxins from the body. Because garlic is a plant antibiotic, when introduced into the animal's body, it will inhibit and destroy some harmful agents and fight inflammation.

Up to now, in addition to propaganda work on the district radio and television station, the district veterinary station has integrated this content into veterinary training sessions in 39 communes and towns in the area. According to recommendations, people should regularly implement this measure, especially in the cold season, on days with heavy rain and wind, the best time to do it is in the late afternoon when the animals come home from eating.
