On the Hua Na hydroelectric reservoir, there are nearly 100 households participating in fish farming with more than 600 cages. In recent years, cage fish farming on the hydroelectric reservoir has helped people in Dong Van and Thong Thu communes (Que Phong) develop their economy, contributing to stabilizing their lives. Mr. Lang Van Cuong's household in Muong Hinh village, Dong Van commune, Que Phong district has 18 fish cages on the Hua Na hydroelectric reservoir. They mainly raise climbing fish and grass carp with a quantity of about 4,000 fish/batch. Photo: HT

Every day, the couple stays on the floating raft to take care of the fish. The fish feed on elephant grass, cassava leaves, cassava roots and small fish from the river, all of which they harvest themselves without spending money to buy. Photo: TP

“My wife goes to the fields, to the forest to cut grass, pick cassava leaves, and pull cassava to make green food for the fish. As for me, I go there to catch small fish like ditch fish, shrimp, etc. to supplement protein for the fish. Each net catch, at least a few nests, sometimes a few hundred kilograms. I can comfortably feed the fish in the cage. Thanks to the use of natural food, the fish are healthy, grow well, and can withstand the rain and floods,” said Mr. Cuong. Photo: HT

Cage fish farming on rivers is currently facing many difficulties and challenges, especially now that rain and floods are becoming more and more erratic, requiring people to have experience and knowledge to raise fish in cages to overcome the rainy and flood season. Photo: TP

Having been involved in cage fish farming on Hua Na hydroelectric reservoir for decades, according to Lang Van Cuong's experience, to minimize damage during the rainy season, first of all, it is necessary to choose the right time to release the fish fry, calculating how to harvest them before the peak of the storm season (October every year). In addition, at home, he has also prepared backup ponds. Photo: HT

Many households focus on investing in sturdy cages and designing suitable cages. During the rainy season, they buy additional cables and ropes to secure the cage system and prevent it from drifting when the water rises. Photo: TP

At the same time, add more floating panels and increase the mesh layer in the cages; at the bottom of the cage, put heavy sandbags to fix the net, avoid twisting the net and impacting when storms occur. Photo: HT

Mr. Luong Van Thang raises fish in cages near the shore, so he poured concrete stakes deep into the shore to reinforce the cages. In addition, he also reinforced the B40 mesh frame in front of the cage area upstream to prevent wood and waste from rushing straight into the cages with the flood water. Photo: TP

For more than 10 years of raising fish in cages on the Chu River, people in Dong Van and Thong Thu communes (Que Phong) have suffered many heavy failures due to floods. Those failures are great lessons in production on rivers with many unpredictable dangers, so people gradually accumulate experience, update knowledge to have response measures, and minimize damage. “In recent years, people have paid great attention to changing the materials of cages and rafts, as well as learning from experience in preventing and combating storms and floods, thus minimizing damage during the storm season,” said Mr. Luong Van Thuong - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Dong Van Commune.
