Episode 86: Regional domestic studies
(Baonghean) - In 2 years (2002 - 2003), with the assistance of WHO (World Health Organization) in terms of experts in the stages of research sample design, sample selection, data processing... The Ministry of Health has conducted a national research project, investigating the rate of diabetes and risk factors throughout Vietnam. This investigation was conducted according to 4 ecological regions (highland; midland; coastal plain; urban and industrial zones), each region has a similar sample size. The results of analysis and specific conclusions are in each section as follows:
(Baonghean) - In 2 years (2002 - 2003), with the assistance of WHO (World Health Organization) in terms of experts in the stages of research sample design, sample selection, data processing... The Ministry of Health has conducted a national research project, investigating the rate of diabetes and risk factors throughout Vietnam. This investigation was conducted according to 4 ecological regions (highland; midland; coastal plain; urban and industrial zones), each region has a similar sample size. The results of analysis and specific conclusions are in each section as follows:
Part One: PREVALENCE OF DIABETES, IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE AND IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE
● The incidence of diabetes nationwide and in each ecological region is:
Nationwide: The rate of diabetes is 2.7%. In which the rate of diabetes in women is 3.7% and in men is 3.3%.
Highlands: diabetes incidence is 2.1% (highest 3.2% and lowest 1.5%);
Midlands: diabetes incidence is 2.2% (highest 3.6% and lowest 1.8%);
Coastal plains: diabetes incidence is 2.7% (highest 4.0% and lowest 2.4%);
Urban and industrial areas: diabetes incidence is 4.4%;
The above research results show that:
The prevalence of diabetes in urban and industrial areas (4.4%) is also approximately the same as the diabetes survey rate in the inner-city areas of Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in 2001 (4%), with the same subjects and research methods.
The mountainous and Central Highlands, coastal plains and midlands have diabetes rates equivalent to or double the city's diabetes rate 10 years ago.
In particular, the rate of diabetes in the group of subjects with risk factors, aged 30 - 64 years, is quite high at 10.5%. The rate of impaired glucose tolerance is 13.8%.
According to the classification of the International Diabetes Federation and WHO, Vietnam's diabetes rate is in region two (rate from 2% - 4.99%) similar to other countries in the region (China, Thailand, Indonesia) and lower than countries in region three (5% - 7.99%) including Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia...
● The rate of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) nationwide and in 2 regions is:
Nationally is 7.3%.
In 4 regions: there is no difference between regions, city 6.5%; plain 7.0%; mountainous 7.1% and midland 8.3%
● The rate of impaired fasting glucose tolerance (HFGT) is relatively low: mountainous areas 2.2%; plains 1.4%; midlands 2.4% and cities 1.8%. The national rate is 1.9%.
Thus, according to the results of this study, the ratio between RLĐHLĐ/RLDNG in Vietnam is 1/3 (foreign countries 1/2). In this study, WHO standard (1998) is used to take fasting blood sugar 6.1mmol/dl, if using the diagnostic standard of IDF (American Diabetes Association) 5.6mmol/dl, the rate of RLĐHLĐ is much higher.
This research result has given us a warning about the increase in diabetes in the coming time. If there is no timely intervention solution, this is an abnormal health problem that our country must pay attention to.
