Doctor Vo Tien Cuong - who directly performed the tube placement procedure - was disciplined with a reprimand.

On September 3, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan - Director of Can Tho Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital, said that the Hospital's Disciplinary Council had met to discuss and issue disciplinary action against the team of doctors on duty who handled the case of placing the wrong drainage tube for patient Le Van Giang.

Accordingly, 3 people including Dr. Vo Tien Cuong - who directly performed the catheter placement procedure - were disciplined with a reprimand. The accompanying penalties include a 6-month suspension from performing the procedure and a 1-month suspension from duty (September) to stabilize his mental state and avoid professional errors. During the disciplinary period, Dr. Cuong still participated in internal medicine examinations, under the direct supervision of the head of the department in difficult cases.

For Dr. Nguyen Van Nha - head of the emergency resuscitation department, although he responded promptly after the incident occurred with the patient, but with his leadership role and having signed the previous consultation minutes of patient Giang but not reviewing the expertise, Dr. Nha was considered to have his emulation reduced by 1 month.

As for technician Nguyen Van En, due to incorrect film shooting technique (lack of right-left annotation on the film), he was demoted for 1 month as a warning.

Currently, patient Giang is stable, the drainage tube on the right lung has been removed, the left lung is now warm and the drainage tube can be removed in the next 1-2 days and discharged from the hospital.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan, previously, patient Giang had a history of tuberculosis and recurrent pneumothorax, so there may be another relapse. "Therefore, to reassure the patient's family, the hospital has agreed to purchase health insurance for the patient locally. When there is a health problem, Mr. Giang can go to the local medical center or go directly to Can Tho Tuberculosis and Lung Hospital, the patient will receive completely free care," Dr. Nhan affirmed.

Also on September 3, Ms. Duong Thi Tiet, Giang's mother, said: "My son's health has improved, but I'm still worried about the future."

Mr. Giang, 29 years old, residing in Hung Phu Ward, Cai Rang District, Can Tho City, was admitted to the hospital on August 28 due to recurrent pneumothorax in the left lung. 10 days ago, he also had a left pneumothorax and was operated on by doctors at Can Tho Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital to insert a tube and discharged.

During this second relapse, according to the doctors, the X-ray results showed that Mr. Giang still had a pneumothorax on the left side. “The doctor then took my child in for surgery. When he was out, I saw that both the left and right sides had incisions for placing tubes. On August 30, the director doctor called me to explain that the doctor had read the X-ray wrongly and had operated on the right side, then redone it. Due to the doctor’s mistake, the hospital will waive all hospital fees for my child,” Ms. Tiet said.

According to Dr. Hua Trung Tiep - Deputy Director of Can Tho Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital, this was a professional error due to the doctor reading the film incorrectly.

Patient Le Van Giang needed a left pleural drainage tube placed, but doctor Vo Tien Cuong mistakenly placed the tube in the right lung, causing the patient to go into traumatic shock.
