At the ceremony, delegates reviewed the life and career of patriotic poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu.

On the evening of July 1, at Ton Thanh Pagoda, My Loc Commune, Can Giuoc District, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Long An coordinated with the People's Committee of Can Giuoc District to organize a celebration of the 190th birthday of patriotic poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu (July 1, 1822 - July 1, 2012).

Nguyen Dinh Chieu was born in Tan Thoi village, Binh Duong district, Tan Binh prefecture, Gia Dinh province, into a poor Confucian family. In 1843, he passed the baccalaureate exam at Gia Dinh examination school.

In 1846, he went to Hue to study, waiting for the Ky Dau examination (1849), but when the exam was about to take place, he received news of his mother's death, so he dropped out of the exam and returned to the South to mourn. On the way back, he cried and missed his mother so much that he became blind in both eyes. Returning to his hometown, he opened a school, dispensed medicine, wrote poetry and became famous as "Do Chieu". In 1859, the French army captured Gia Dinh citadel, Nguyen Dinh Chieu returned to his wife's hometown in Thanh Ba village (now My Loc commune, Can Giuoc district), opened a class to teach, wrote patriotic poems and literature, and became a doctor with the help of his virtuous wife, Le Thi Dien.

At that time, the anti-French movements broke out, spread and developed strongly. In Can Giuoc, the patriots under the command of Bui Quang Dieu secretly attacked the Tay Duong fort on the full moon night of the 11th lunar month of the year Tan Dau (December 16, 1861). Although he did not witness the developments of the attack on the fort that day, the heroic fighting spirit, sacrificing oneself for the people and the country of the Can Giuoc patriots, poured into the burning heart of Nguyen Dinh Chieu with patriotism and love for the people. The image of the peasant patriots in the attack on the fort that year was portrayed by him in the eulogy for the Can Giuoc patriots.

In 1862, the Hue court signed the Nham Tuat peace treaty, ceding three eastern provinces (Gia Dinh - Dinh Tuong - Bien Hoa) to France. Thus, Can Giuoc - Nguyen Dinh Chieu's second hometown also fell into the hands of the enemy. Not willing to stay in the enemy-occupied area, he returned to Ba Tri - Ben Tre, continued to open a school, practice medicine, and compose patriotic poems and literature. The French colonialists tried every way to entice and bribe him, but he firmly refused all of them, remaining loyal to the people until his last breath.

He died on May 24, Mau Ty year (July 3, 1888) in Ba Tri./.
