National High School Graduation Examination: Using a 20-point scale, changing the method of determining graduation.

According to the draft regulations for organizing the 2015 national high school graduation exam, announced by the Ministry of Education and Training at a press conference on the afternoon of December 18th, the Ministry will organize exams in eight subjects: Mathematics, Literature, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Foreign Language.

To be considered for high school graduation, candidates must take four subjects: three compulsory subjects (Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language) and one subject of their choice.

Candidates who have not studied a foreign language or have studied it under substandard conditions may choose a substitute subject from the elective subjects to replace the foreign language exam.

The 2015 National High School Graduation Examination will change the way graduation scores are calculated for candidates.

A new feature in the Draft Regulations for the 2015 National High School Graduation Examination is that the Ministry of Education and Training will use a 20-point grading scale.

Associate Professor, Dr. Mai Van Trinh, Director of the Department of Examination and Quality Assurance in Education (Ministry of Education and Training), stated that the use of a 20-point scale serves two purposes: to assess high school graduation and to provide a basis for universities and colleges to use in admissions. To achieve these goals, the requirement for differentiating the proficiency levels of candidates, as reflected in the results of the subjects in the exam, must be set at a higher level than in separate exams in previous years.

To help universities and colleges select candidates who are a good fit for their diverse resources, training quality, reputation, and prestige, the exam results must have a high degree of differentiation.

To achieve differentiation, the quality of the exam questions plays a crucial role, while the invigilation and marking processes also directly impact the candidates' results. Therefore, expanding the grading scale from 10 to 20 points will help differentiate candidates' results more precisely, better supporting the university admissions process. For this reason, the Ministry of Education and Training advocates using a 20-point scale in the national high school graduation exam.

Another new point in the Draft Regulations for the 2015 National High School Graduation Examination is that the Ministry of Education and Training has proposed the following method for calculating high school graduation scores:

Graduation score = Total score of 4 exams + total bonus points (if any)/8 + average grade of 12th grade. The graduation score is rounded to two decimal places, as automatically calculated by the computer software.
