Lotus leaves have a huge diameter.

The lotus leaf spreads nearly two meters wide, enough to support an average-weight person.

ABC News reports that the water lily leaf in Geoff Cochrane's garden in northeast Melbourne is 1.7 metres in diameter. To check and compare the size of other leaves, he called many gardens across Australia.

“The biggest leaf in Adelaide was 1.65m in diameter, so we beat that,” says Cochrane. The water lilies are grown from seed in warm conditions and need to be fertilised every three weeks.

Cochrane is a gardener at Yarra Junction Nursery in Victoria, Australia. The water lily he grows is a giant Amazon water lily.

According to this gardener, the lotus leaf has a complex and sturdy structure underneath, so his granddaughter can sit on the leaf without sinking.
