ABC News reports that the lily leaf in Geoff Cochrane's garden in north-east Melbourne is 1.7 metres in diameter. To check and compare the size of other leaves, he called many gardens across Australia.
“The biggest leaf in Adelaide was 1.65 metres in diameter, so we beat that,” says Cochrane. The water lilies are grown from seed in warm conditions and need to be fertilised every three weeks.
Cochrane is a gardener at Yarra Junction Nursery in Victoria, Australia. The water lily he grows is a giant Amazon water lily.
According to this gardener, the lotus leaf has a complex and sturdy structure underneath, so his granddaughter can sit on the leaf without sinking.
