Through the scientific research topic “Research on selecting new peach blossom varieties for production”, the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute has selected and created 3 new peach blossom varieties with high quality, beautiful appearance, meeting consumer tastes. These are GL2-1, GL 2-2 and GL 2-3.

According to Dr. Dang Van Dong, Head of the research team, all three varieties have been recognized by the Science and Technology Council of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as "new flower varieties for trial production" since November 2013 and have been accepted by flower growers in some northern provinces for production because of their high economic efficiency.

1. Peach blossom variety GL 2-1

- Origin: The Center for Research and Development of Flowers and Ornamental Plants (Institute of Vegetable and Fruit Research) collected and selected from local varieties of our country from 2008 - 2010.

- Characteristics: Red flowers, thick flower density/branch, large (diameter > 3.5 cm), many petals, average 20 - 22 petals/flower. Blooms in clusters, high blooming rate (> 95%). Lasts up to 15 - 16 days, very popular with consumers. The plant grows well, develops quickly, has good resistance to pests and diseases, especially gummosis at the base, trunk and branches.

In recent years, the GL 2-1 peach variety has been successfully applied in some localities such as Hanoi, Hai Duong and Thai Nguyen, with economic efficiency 15 - 30% higher than existing peach varieties.

2. Peach blossom variety GL 2-2

- Characteristics: Pink flowers, large flower diameter (> 4 cm), number of petals/flower from 20 - 22, blooming concentrated, high blooming rate over 90%, flower branch durability 12 -15 days, favored by consumers. The plant grows strongly, develops quickly, has good resistance to pests and diseases, especially gummosis at the base, trunk and branches.

In recent years, the Phai GL 2-2 peach blossom variety has been successfully applied in a number of localities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hai Duong and Thai Nguyen, with economic efficiency 20-50% higher than existing Phai peach varieties.

3. White peach variety GL 2-3

- Characteristics: White flowers, large flower diameter (<3.5 cm), number of petals/flower from 18 to 20, concentrated blooming, high blooming rate of over 90%, flower branch durability of 12 to 15 days, favored by consumers. The plant grows strongly, develops quickly, has good resistance to pests and diseases; especially gummosis at the base, trunk and

In recent years, the Bach GL 2-3 peach variety has been successfully applied in some localities such as Hanoi, Lang Son and Hai Duong, with economic efficiency 30-50% higher than existing white peach varieties.

Instructions for planting and care

- Planting season: February - March.

- Apply basal fertilizer with the following amount for 1 hectare: 30 tons of composted manure or organic fertilizer + 1,100 kg of phosphate fertilizer + 600 kg of lime powder by adding fertilizer, mixing soil and filling the hole 7-10 days before planting.

- Topdress 2,700 kg of compound NPK fertilizer (13:13:13 + TE) + 270 kg of urea for 1 hectare by mixing 2 types of fertilizer in a ratio of 1:10 and dividing into 5 topdressing times: Topdress the first time 1 month after planting with 300 kg of NPK + 30 kg of urea by mixing fertilizer with water, watering around the base. Divide the remaining fertilizer into 4 equal fertilization times, 25 - 30 days apart, combined with weeding, hoeing, hilling and watering to keep the soil moist. Depending on the growth and development of the tree, you can spray additional foliar fertilizers such as: Dau Trau 501, 502 and Atonik to help the tree grow many new branches and have a beautiful, lush canopy.

- Pruning: Depending on the purpose of shaping and creating the shape of the tree, there are different forms of pruning in the early period after planting. Start pinching the top when the shoots are 30 - 35 cm high, continue doing so until the beginning of July, then stop pinching the top and regularly adjust so that the branches develop evenly and symmetrically on all four sides.

- Conduct bark ringing in mid-August of the lunar calendar (September of the solar calendar).

- Strip leaves and cut branches 45 - 65 days before Tet depending on weather conditions.
