(Baonghean.vn) - The pig farm of Thanh Do Production and Trading Service Joint Stock Company located in Hamlet 6b, Tien Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh District, although only operating for 9 months, has caused serious environmental pollution. With no other choice, Hamlet 6b has long set up a watchtower to send people to guard and prevent the company from discharging wastewater into Ban Vang Dam.

According to the feedback of Tien Thanh commune people, on the morning of December 29, 2011, we went to the pig farm of Thanh Do Production and Trading Service Joint Stock Company. The outside of the pig farm looked like it was under construction, not already in operation, because several groups of masons were building embankments and excavators were digging... Inside, the two pig farms were built with large-scale, modern steel, with hundreds of foreign sows inside. But what we were more concerned about was the environmental treatment.

The drainage system from the pig farm to the pond was not carefully constructed by the construction company.

Behind the pig farm is an unscientific wastewater treatment area. Although the company has built a biogas tank, the volume is not enough to contain tens of cubic meters of wastewater per day. It is known that this pond was previously connected to Ban Vang Dam, so all wastewater from the pig farm flowed directly into the dam, causing serious pollution. Since the people discovered that this was the cause of water pollution, they asked the company to build a road across it to prevent wastewater from the pig farm from flowing into Ban Vang Dam. Since then, the company has had to use a pump to pump wastewater from that small pond onto a truck to transport it elsewhere, but the wastewater still overflowed, polluting the surrounding environment.

On November 5, 2011, people in Hamlet 6b, Tien Thanh Commune, came to the company's pig farm to demand that the pig farm stop operating. Faced with this situation, the People's Committee of Yen Thanh District went directly to the scene and requested that the company invest in building a wastewater treatment system for the pig farm. Mr. Nguyen Sy Hung - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Thanh District, said: Regarding the environmental pollution at the pig farm of Thanh Do Production and Trading Service Joint Stock Company, the People's Committee of Yen Thanh District also issued a document requesting the company to remedy the situation no later than January 15, 2012. If the unit does not comply by that date, the People's Committee of the District will suspend the pig farm's operations.

Determined not to let the pig farm discharge wastewater into Ban Vang dam, for over a month now, the people of hamlet 6b have set up a hut behind the pig farm, taking turns to guard and monitor all activities of the pig farm. The day we arrived was the shift of Mr. Tuan Anh's family. Meeting us, Mr. Tuan Anh was indignant: "This pig farm has been polluting our people for many months now, although we have requested to handle it, the company still ignores it. The most serious is when on days of heavy rain, water from the pig farm overflows into Ban Vang dam and then flows into the residential area of hamlet 6b, causing every well in the village to smell of pig manure. It was not until the people in the hamlet came to the pig farm to protest and demand that the pig farm stop operating that the company agreed to do so. The reason why we have to set up a watchtower is because at night, if there is no one to supervise, the pig farm uses a pump to pump wastewater from the holding pond to Ban Vang dam. If by January 15, 2012, the company does not complete the construction of the wastewater treatment system, the people of hamlet 6b will have a more decisive solution for this pig farm."

However, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - Director of Thanh Do Company said: The company admitted that the wastewater from the pig farm has polluted the environment. Immediately after the people protested and the relevant authorities inspected the request for treatment, we really wanted to speed up the construction of the wastewater treatment plant and build the embankment, but the people persistently obstructed and caused difficulties, so it was very difficult to carry out. Our company's pig farm invested tens of billions of VND, so local people need to create conditions for the company to handle the treatment to continue operating.

This pig farm was built on a hillside, which is also the source of hamlet 6b. Therefore, when there is heavy rain, all the rainwater on the hill overflows the pig farm, carrying all the wastewater to the residential area. This shows that Thanh Do Production and Trading Service Joint Stock Company has taken the environmental treatment work at the pig farm too lightly. If before putting it into operation, the company had dug a trench around it, built a strong embankment inside, and built a wastewater pond system with many compartments for careful filtration, then environmental pollution would not have occurred. It is not wrong for people living around the pig farm to protest against this unit for polluting the water source. Therefore, by all means, Thanh Do Production and Trading Service Joint Stock Company must urgently build a wastewater treatment system on schedule so that people in hamlet 6b can stabilize their lives. The lesson from Thai Duong Company's pig farm in Dai Son commune (Do Luong) is still there.
