The Environmental Police Department of Gia Lai Province Police said it has just decided to fine a facility that used chemicals such as foliar fertilizer to ripen durian.

Gia Lai Provincial Police, the Environmental Police Department of Gia Lai Provincial Police said that they have just advised the authorities to impose an administrative fine of 20 million VND on the business establishment of Mr. Nguyen Duc Trong (born in 1974, residing at 162/76 Truong Chinh Street, Pleiku City) for using chemicals to soak durian.

Previously, on September 13, 2017, through reconnaissance work, the Environmental Police Department discovered and caught red-handed at a durian business establishment (house number 76, alley 162, Truong Chinh street, group 8, Phu Dong ward, Pleiku city, Gia Lai) 3 workers were dipping durian into 3 buckets (20 liters) containing solution.

According to the authorities, Mr. Trong has been dipping chemicals to stimulate the ripening of durian for about 2 months now. On average, more than 1 ton of green durian collected from Pleiku city and neighboring districts is dipped in chemicals and sold every day.

Mr. Trong said: “I see other people doing it, so I do it. I order the goods, transfer the money, and then the person in Saigon sends it to me. If it were directly, it could be toxic, but I dilute it slightly. Then I sell it mainly in the North and deliver it to supermarkets.”

In addition to the fine, the authorities destroyed 339 kg of durian, three 500 ml white plastic bottles labeled as high-grade foliar fertilizer HPC-97 HXN, unused, and 35 white plastic bottles of the same type.

How to identify chemical-free durian

Like jackfruit, durian is one of the fruits that is often ripened with toxic chemicals. Therefore, most consumers are interested in identifying and distinguishing between chemically ripened durian and naturally ripened durian to ensure safety.

To identify naturally ripened durian or chemically ripened durian, buyers should first pay attention to the fruit's appearance.

If the durian is chemically ripened, people usually pick the unripe fruit from the tree and bring it home to soak in the chemical. Because it is left for a longer time, the fruit often wilts, the thorns are bruised and the color fades. Meanwhile, the tree-ripened durian has thorns and a stem that looks fresh, green and hard.

When cut open, naturally ripe durian can easily separate the segments, the segments are golden yellow, fatty, fragrant, can be smelled from afar, durian flesh is very sticky and smooth.
