(Baonghean) -In the middle of the arid land of Tien Thanh mountainous commune - Yen Thanh district, there is a plant that can withstand harsh soil and climate conditions. That is the plant of the Chinese clematis. But few people expect that the flowers of this herb have contributed to poverty reduction for the people here.

Being a mountainous commune far from the center, agricultural production mainly depends on nature. Therefore, in the past, the people's life was extremely difficult, each year only intensively cultivating one spring rice crop, the other crops were successful or failed depending on the weather, so the area of cultivated land in summer-autumn production was often difficult due to lack of water. Some of the main laborers in the locality had to leave their hometown to work for a living. However, in recent years, the local government and farmers here have had many concerns and creativity in converting the appropriate crop structure.

In particular, during the summer-autumn crop, the fields here have taken on a new green color. On the occasion of the Full Moon of the seventh lunar month, from home gardens to field gardens, the purple color of the blooming wormwood flowers is everywhere. About 15 days after the Full Moon, it is the time when farmers harvest in large quantities, the whole village is busy harvesting, the fragrance of this flower has eased the hardships of the people. Mrs. Chu Thi Huong - Yen Vien hamlet excitedly said: "The family only has 2 main workers but every year they grow 5 sao of wormwood, the average yield is 2 quintals/sao, bringing in an income of 5 - 6 million VND/sao.

According to ancient medical books and modern medical research: The flower of the artemisia flower is used to boil water to drink to increase secretion, bile secretion, protect liver cells, prevent fatty liver, lower blood pressure, promote circulation, cool down and increase resistance for the human body.

Initially, this medicinal plant only grew on hillsides, some households often picked it up and sold it to traditional medicine stores to earn extra income. Realizing that the plant had economic value and was easy to sell, many people took the seeds to plant in their home gardens, then brought them to the field, each season, and traders bought them right at home. Although it is an easy-to-grow plant, with little investment and a growing period of only 3 months, the most difficult part is creating the seeds, finding the secret to sowing the seeds to germinate and grow, is the whole process of creative labor of farmers.

Mr. Bui Trong Phi - Cua Tho hamlet, Tien Thanh commune said: After each harvest, the seeds are separated and dried and stored carefully. Every year, around the middle of the fourth lunar month, they are sown, but the most important thing is to find every measure to prevent the ants from eating the seeds. When the seeds have germinated and the young plants have grown about 5 - 7cm, the soil is made loose and then water is added to the field to keep it moist enough, then the young plants are planted. The investment for each sao only requires a little compost and 5 kg of NPK compound fertilizer.

Although in the early summer-autumn crop this year, in severe drought conditions, nearly half of the area in Tien Thanh lacked water for rice cultivation, some areas had to be converted to growing other crops, including 30 hectares on highland areas intensively cultivated with medicinal plants. With experience accumulated over many years, the commune has focused on directing and mobilizing people in 9 hamlets to put the plant into intensive cultivation on a large scale on dry fields, households with few plants have from 1 to 2 sao, households with labor invest in intensive cultivation of 5 to 6 sao. Hamlets with many intensive cultivation areas are Yen Vien, Cua Tho, Nhan Tien, hamlets 6A; 6B, in which Mr. Ha Danh Tri's household - Cua Tho hamlet, has invested in expanding the area up to 1 hectare.

Mr. Tang Ngoc Quy - Secretary of Yen Vien hamlet Party Cell said: The hamlet has 150 households, but this summer-autumn crop, 2/3 of the households grow artemisia vulgaris, after harvesting, they also get 200kg of dried artemisia vulgaris. With the current selling price of 25-30 thousand VND/kg, each sao also brings in an income of approximately 6 million VND, if left until the end of the year, the price will be higher. In the hamlet, Mr. Tran Dinh Ke's family is the basis for purchasing and consuming products for the people. In the first 3 months of this year alone, more than 10 tons of dried artemisia vulgaris have been purchased, with prices ranging from 50-70 thousand VND/kg.

Thanks to the income from the plant, hundreds of households here have risen out of poverty, creating jobs for surplus labor. Most families have been able to invest in their children's education, and rural infrastructure has been increasingly built by local contributions. Mr. Nguyen Huu Dai - Chairman of Tien Thanh Commune People's Committee said: Although it is a highland commune that always has difficulties in water sources for production, especially in the summer-autumn crop, thanks to knowing how to choose suitable plant varieties for intensive cultivation, especially the plant, the dry lands are no longer abandoned as before. It is expected that in the near future, the commune will plan concentrated production areas and find stable outlets for products for local people.

With the increasing demands of society, the plant in Tien Thanh commune is a companion of farmers in the fight against hunger and poverty. This is the result of the efforts to strive and be creative in the production of farmers in the poor countryside, making the barren land more and more blossom.
