(Baonghean) -In April 2011, the flower and ornamental plant village in Hamlet 4, Nghi Lien Commune (Vinh City) was recognized by the People's Committee of Nghe An Province as a provincial-level craft village. The economic efficiency of this flower and ornamental plant village has affirmed the success in economic restructuring, which is the direction in building new rural areas of the locality.

Talking to us while still busy pruning bonsai trees to deliver to customers, joy appeared on Ms. Le Thi Vinh's face: Thanks to growing flowers and bonsai trees, my family has built a spacious two-story house, bought living facilities to serve life. The annual income from this job is from 200 - 300 million VND. Along with Ms. Vinh's family, many households in the neighborhood such as Mr. Nguyen Duc Nam, Nguyen Dinh At, Nguyen Dinh Binh have an area of 3000 - 5000m2Growing ornamental plants brings high income and a comfortable life.

The model of growing flowers and ornamental plants brings high income to Ms. Le Thi Vinh's family.

Before the 1990s, the difficult life urged the couple to find ways to develop the economy. Luck came to her family when the government created conditions for them to visit and learn from models and experiences in the northern provinces: Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh. The visit helped Ms. Vinh as well as many households in the neighborhood to "breakthrough" in economic development thinking. The garden area of the families that used to grow firewood and trees with no economic value was replaced by flowers, ornamental plants, fruit trees, etc.

In the first years of getting acquainted with the profession of growing ornamental plants, with weak business experience, limited capital, and harsh Lao wind weather, there were times when it seemed like failure. However, thanks to the consensus of each family and the determination of the hamlet steering committee, they worked hard to learn more about the experiences of previous models, encouraging households to overcome difficulties and persevere in implementing the policy of converting crop structure. Along with the time of accumulating experience, the creativity in production labor of the people, the techniques of multiplying, grafting, cutting, pruning, shaping and caring for plants were clearly multiplied. The model of flower - ornamental plant village was formed in hamlet 4. Households applied the motto: multiplying and planting short-term plant varieties to grow long-term plants with higher economic value. The quality of flowers and ornamental plants of the village is known to customers near and far, not only supplying the market in and outside the province but also to neighboring Laos. Families and members of gardening associations compete to improve their skills, learn about plant varieties, and how to prune them to suit market tastes.

In addition to garden economy, gardening members have expanded the area of trees to grow on low-efficiency vegetable fields, or rented more land. Hamlet 4 has built a high-income field with a crop structure of 4 crops/year, in which Tet flower crop and summer melon crop are the main crops, bringing in an income of 180-200 million VND/ha/year. Along with the effective development of garden economy, people in the hamlet have produced all the assigned area with high results, participating in diverse services such as: tree planting services for construction works, offices, flower trading on weekends, holidays, etc. Doing well, many households have opened companies in the fields of construction and services, creating many jobs for workers in the hamlet. Thanks to that, in recent years, the economy of hamlet 4 has developed continuously, families have built solid houses, purchased expensive means of living, many households have annual income of up to 300-400 million VND/year; average income per capita in 2010 reached 1.7 million VND/person/month.

The economy has developed, creating the premise for other areas to develop together, children have the opportunity to study, the number of students passing the entrance exams to colleges and universities is high every year. In particular, members have actively contributed to building the infrastructure of the hamlet with materials as well as working days. With the support of the State and the contribution of the people, hamlet 4 has built 3.5 km of asphalt road, 2.7 km of irrigation canals, and built a hamlet cultural house with a total value of billions of VND. Recognizing the results achieved, recently hamlet 4 was recognized as a provincial cultural village and a flower and ornamental plant craft village.

Sharing with us, Mr. Le Van Phuong - Chairman of Nghi Lien Commune People's Committee said: The craft village of Hamlet 4 brings high economic value, creating a green, clean and beautiful ecological environment. This is a model for the locality to replicate, a new direction in building a new rural area of the commune.
