Making money from passion fruit: Need appropriate orientation
Passion fruit is a new crop introduced to Nghe An but has attracted attention because it is easy to grow, has export products, and is suitable for many types of soil.
We came to Tho Loc hamlet in Nghia Khanh commune, Nghia Dan district - where passion fruit growing is emerging. The passion fruit garden of Trinh Thi Xuan and Phan Ngoc Quang's family is located on a gentle mountainside. This season, the lemon garden has closed its canopy.
She happily said: "Last year when we went to Lam Dong, we saw that this tree was very easy to grow, so my husband and I decided to buy the seeds." According to her, her family's lemon garden was newly planted in May 2010, on an area of about 0.7 hectares, and in less than a year it has already produced more than 250 kg of fruit. Each kg is sold at the market for 15,000 VND.

According to Mr. Thanh, Deputy Director of Nghe An Food Joint Stock Company, passion fruit is one of the products that helps the company recover from inflation. In 2010, the company purchased and processed over 1,500 tons, reaching a value of over VND200 billion, accounting for over 90% of output and revenue.
The passion fruit market is large, from Taiwan, Hong Kong, to the EU countries, the US and the Middle East. Compared to other crops for export, passion fruit is the easiest to grow, has a long production cycle (4-5 years) and can be grown on many types of soil, including Feralit hill soil. Currently, in Tho Loc (Nghia Khanh, Nghia Dan), there are 4 households growing with a total area of 2 hectares, supported by Nghe An Food Joint Stock Company in terms of technology and product consumption.
However, due to spontaneous planting, people have not received support from the State and have to pay for themselves the cost of nearly tens of millions of VND/ha. Hopefully, in the coming time, relevant departments and sectors will need to research and fully and accurately evaluate the economic efficiency of passion fruit, thereby having appropriate orientations and support policies.
