This is the first result of the application of the State-level project "Research on the use of autologous stem cells in the treatment of breast cancer and cervical cancer" led by Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Duy Thang, Deputy Director of Hue Central Hospital.
By the morning of July 3, the patient's health had improved very positively, almost completely recovered.
Patient Le Thi S. was hospitalized in October 2012, with late-stage cervical cancer, her life was very fragile.
On June 25, the hospital completed the autologous stem cell transplant procedure to treat cancer for the patient.
After two surgeries, the patient continued to receive high-dose chemotherapy with support using autologous hematopoietic stem cells.
Specifically, the patient's own cells are collected, preserved at very low temperatures, then the hospital uses these cells to transplant into the patient, through many treatment interventions and applying stem cell methods to restore the patient's health.
Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Duy Thang - Head of the project affirmed that this method is applied to breast and ovarian cancer patients who have failed treatment with current conventional treatment methods in Vietnam or patients with late-stage cancer.
He added that the hospital is currently continuing to apply the above method to treat two other cancer patients in similar conditions with very positive results... Patients from all localities across the country can register to participate in this treatment method at Hue Central Hospital.
Thus, following the success of the first human heart transplant (March 2011), the Heartware partial artificial heart transplant surgery for a patient (June 2014), the first case of using stem cells to treat breast and cervical cancer has been successful, opening a new direction for patients who are unfortunately suffering from serious illnesses.
This result has opened up the prospect of successful application for many patients with late-stage breast and ovarian cancer.../.
