The patient is Mr. Luong Duc Vinh, 62 years old, from Hai Phong, with a history of high blood pressure for 20 years. This patient has been taking high blood pressure medication regularly to control his blood pressure. Recently, he felt chest pain, and after many visits to lower-level hospitals, he still did not know the cause. When he went to Bach Mai Hospital for examination, the doctors diagnosed him with coronary artery stenosis.
Dr. Duong Duc Hung, Head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Unit - who directly performed the surgery on patient Vinh, said that the difference in this surgery was that instead of using general anesthesia to perform heart surgery, the doctors only numbed the chest area. What is special is that while the doctor performed the procedure, the patient was still awake, and others could ask questions and talk.
In addition, this new surgical method is a hope for many cases of severe patients with weak overall condition. Because this method overcomes the disadvantages of general anesthesia. At the same time, the cost of surgery is also reduced (reduced anesthesia costs, reduced artificial lungs as with general anesthesia). However, this is a very difficult technique, requiring experience and skill of the technician.
