During his visit, the Russian Foreign Minister will hold talks with his host counterpart Ri Yong Ho on issues such as bilateral relations and recent developments on the Korean Peninsula.
Lavrov's visit comes as North Korean and US officials are accelerating preparations for a summit between the two countries' leaders scheduled to take place next month, despite the meeting being canceled by President Donald Trump.
According to the North Korean Embassy in Moscow, Mr. Lavrov may stay in Pyongyang for two days.
Russia, along with China, is North Korea's traditional ally.
During North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho's visit to Moscow last month, he met with Lavrov and invited him to visit North Korea. At that time, Lavrov raised the possibility of a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at some point in the future.
