Winning Wimbledon for the 7th time, Federer returns to world number one

July 9, 2012 06:51

Roger Federer shattered Andy Murray's hopes of becoming the first British man to win Wimbledon since 1936 with a 3-1 (4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4) victory in the final at the All-England Club.

This was Federer’s 17th Grand Slam title. At Wimbledon alone, the Swiss player won his 7th title, thereby equaling Peter Sampras’ record. But most importantly, Federer returned to the world number one position – a position he had lost since May 2010. In addition, the Swiss “express train” also equaled Sampras’ record of 286 weeks at the world number one position.

Before facing Federer in the Wimbledon final, Murray had never won a set in his three previous Grand Slam finals. Murray had lost to Federer in two of those three finals (US Open 2008 and Australian Open 2010). Therefore, Murray was eager to break the curse on home soil, especially when he received enthusiastic support from home fans.

In fact, Murray had a great start in the first set when he broke Federer in the first game and then in the ninth game to win 6-4. This was also Murray's first winning set in his career in the Grand Slam finals he participated in. But that was all Murray could do in this match. Although he played quite well in the second set when competing with Federer, he lost the break in the decisive 12th game and lost the match 5-7.

The match had to be suspended in the third set (the score was 1-1, Federer led 40-0 in the third game) when it suddenly started to rain, forcing the organizers to use a roof. And it seemed that the roofed court conditions were very suitable for Federer's playing style, as evidenced by the fact that the Swiss player played much better after the match was suspended. Federer won an extremely important break in the sixth game and then ended the third set with a 6-3 victory.

The more Federer played, the more he proved his mettle and class as he continuously scored points thanks to powerful backhands and effective net shots. The Swiss player also made Murray exhausted with his ball-handling moves to the two corners of the court. Meanwhile, Murray seemed to be mentally stressed as he appeared impatient and often made mistakes. As a result, Federer continued to break in the 5th game of the 4th set to take a 3-2 lead before ending the set with a 6-4 victory. In the end, Federer defeated Murray with a score of 3-1 (4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4) to win his 7th Wimbledon title.
