In 2006, Armstrong, then 43, received $7.5 million from SCA for winning seven Tour de France cycling titles. The American cyclist later admitted to doping while competing, and was found guilty of fraud in court proceedings.
“The awards, which must be returned directly to the SCA, are considered the largest fines imposed on an individual in U.S. court history,” the SCA said.
SCA initially refused to pay Armstrong his sixth Tour de France win in 2004. The American then sued SCA in a Dallas court and won, receiving $2.5 million. So the $10 million that Armstrong just lost is not the final figure. SCA will continue to sue in a Dallas court to claim the previous $2.5 million.
Armstrong was once the envy of many athletes, overcoming cancer to win the Tour de France and then retiring in 2011. However, a year later, the Anti-Doping Agency discovered that the American cyclist had cheated, banned him for life and stripped him of seven championship titles.
Armstrong was accused of being part of "the most sophisticated, professional and successful cheating program" the sport has ever known.
