In an audio recording leaked on YouTube on March 5, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet spoke to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton about allegations that Ukraine's pro-Western leaders may have had a hand in the bloodshed in Kiev on February 20-21 that left dozens of people and about 15 police officers dead.

On March 5, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release confirming the authenticity of the recordings of the above conversation.

Urmat Paet had this phone conversation after returning from Kiev, where he spoke with a representative of the Ukrainian opposition to the then-government of Mr. Yanukovych.

Mr Paet was informed of the presence of snipers. They killed dozens of people, including police and protesters.

The opposition in Kiev convinced Mr. Paet not to expand the investigation into the incident involving these snipers because they (the opposition) were behind it.

Over the phone, Mr. Paet told Ms. Ashton that the opposition might have hired these snipers from within NATO ranks.

Mr Paet's spokeswoman Minna-Liina Lind confirmed the authenticity of the recording, adding that the foreign minister "deeply regrets" the leak.

Earlier the same day, Russian websites released several recordings of conversations between EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and Estonian Foreign Minister about the appearance of snipers among protesters in Kiev.

According to Russian media, through these recordings it is clear that the EU, specifically Ms. Ashton, was fully aware that snipers in the protest group had seriously injured dozens of people, some of whom died in the hospital.

In particular, Russian media also accused European diplomats of knowing that the opposition protesters had hired snipers (from NATO) but still deliberately turned a blind eye./.
