“The prosecutor has decided to arrest Mr Mohamed Badie after security forces located him,” the report said. “Legal proceedings are underway,” it added.

The arrests come as Egypt's military carries out a bloody crackdown on protesters supporting ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

Khairat el-Shater, Mr Badie's right-hand man, is also in custody and is due to appear in court on August 25 for allegedly killing eight people outside the Brotherhood's headquarters in Cairo last June.

Egypt's military-backed government has accused the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt of seeking to destabilize it after it ousted President Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

The Egyptian government has arrested hundreds of protesters supporting ousted President Morsi as it cracks down on protests.

On August 14, the Egyptian government brutally suppressed thousands of protesters supporting Mr. Morsi in Cairo.

The crackdown has sparked a wave of violence across Egypt. Nearly 900 people, including about 100 police officers, have reportedly been killed in the clashes.

After the incident, the international community condemned the Egyptian government for using harsh measures to suppress protesters./.
