Laos and the US agree to continue supporting mine clearance

Under the agreement, the US will provide Laos with $9 million to be used for mine clearance, land clearance, risk education and victim assistance. According to Maria Otero, secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, Democracy and Human Rights, the agreement was announced during a meeting with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith on June 7.
Since 1996, the US government has provided about 22 million USD to support Laos in mine clearance. During this visit, Ms. Otero also paid attention to support programs to control illegal drug production and trafficking in social life, especially among women and youth./.
