Reuters reported that the Deputy Commander of the US Cyber Command, Air Force Lieutenant General Kevin McLaughlin, said on September 17 that the US Department of Defense is building a giant electronic system to provide a general assessment of weaknesses in US computer networks, weapons systems and military facilities, thereby helping officials proactively "patch" the vulnerabilities.
A framework agreement could be in place within the next few months, McLaughlin said. Initially, data entry will be done manually, but the system will be fully automated in the coming years to help defense officials detect and respond to cyber attacks immediately.
Plans to set up the system were pushed forward after the Pentagon released a critical report earlier this year on cyber security threats and repeated cyber attacks from Russia and China.
In this report, Michael Gilmore, Director of Weapons Testing and Evaluation at the US Department of Defense, warned that most major US weapons systems are vulnerable to hackers./
