Pentagon reveals hundreds of thousands of US troops stationed overseas
The number of US military personnel as of September 30 in Afghanistan was 15.3 thousand, in Iraq 8.9 thousand and in Syria 1.72 thousand, according to statistics recently released by the Pentagon.

The force in Afghanistan is the largest of any country currently at war. The number is larger than the plan previously announced by the Donald Trump administration.
The largest US military presence is still in Japan with nearly 45,000 troops, followed by Germany with 36,000 and South Korea with nearly 25,000. The total number of US troops overseas is 257,300.
