The Hoang Mai River basin up to the Mai Giang River confluence is 370 km2 wide. The water resources of this basin have been fully exploited with the basin area of the reservoirs in the upstream being 251 km2, the remaining 119 km2 is mainly agricultural land and production forests, with poor water resources.
According to the planning, Hoang Mai town (also the downstream area of Hoang Mai river) will become a large industrial center of the province, the water demand of industrial zones has increased dramatically, much larger than the current demand for water for daily life and agricultural production. Therefore, balancing water sources and proposing water supply measures to develop Hoang Mai town has become more urgent.
On August 29, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued Decision No. 2065/QD-BNN.KH allowing investment preparation and assigning the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An to be the investor of the project "Sluice to control salinity and improve the environment in the downstream area of Hoang Mai River".
