According to RFI, the French daily "Le Figaro" recently published an article "Beijing has almost won in Hong Kong", explaining that the Occupy Central pro-democracy movement is showing signs of dying out because it is unpopular with only 28% of supporters.

The article opens with the observation that Beijing appears to be about to take the gamble of “letting the situation in Hong Kong rot.”

The movement demanding free elections in 2017, which has taken over the streets since September 28, has lost popular support and died down without China having to directly intervene. The newspaper cited recent poll results, with 83% wanting the movement to end the protests, and 68% wanting the government to clear the occupied areas.

The more than 2 months of protests and street occupations are considered quite long, affecting people's lives as well as economic activities. Traffic is congested, busy shopping areas are obstructed, people want democracy and support the movement, but are tired. The image of the movement was further tarnished when some people broke into the Hong Kong legislature. Currently, the number of people occupying the streets has decreased significantly, but it still causes a lot of traffic obstruction.

However, the movement's leaders still called for "holding on" while waiting for another method of struggle./.
