Le Quang Liem - Vietnam's first world champion

On the evening of June 10, from Russia, chess coach Duong Thanh Binh (currently studying for his doctorate here) chatted with Tuoi Tre online: "Congratulations, we have our first world champion." And, the person who brought this pride home was chess player Le Quang Liem.

After winning 4th place overall in the rapid chess event of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk, (Russia) chess player Le Quang Liem continued to participate in the blitz chess event taking place on June 9 and 10 also here.

In blitz chess, players compete in 30 rounds, each opponent plays two games of first and second. In each game, players are given 3 minutes + 2 seconds for each move, starting from move 1.

In this tournament that just ended on the evening of June 10, after 30 games, the number 1 Vietnamese player won the championship with 20.5 points, 20 points more than the runner-up, the host Russian player Grischuk Alexander.

According to coach Duong Thanh Binh, this is not only Liem's ​​joy but also an honor for Vietnamese chess in general, because in the history of Vietnamese chess, although there have been many players who achieved high rankings in youth tournaments, this is the first time he has become a world champion.

In addition to the championship title held by Le Quang Liem, chess player Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son also participated in this tournament and won 5th place overall with 19.5 points.

Also according to coach Duong Thanh Binh, with the total prize money of the tournament being 200,000 USD, winning this championship, Liem will receive 40,000 USD (over 800 million VND).
