Co Am Pagoda is located in the historical and cultural relic complex of Hai Vai, built in the 11th year of Minh Mang (1832) and has been a spiritual place of worship for the people of Phu Dien since then. However, due to the passage of time and historical events, the pagoda has been almost completely destroyed. In 1994, the pagoda was recognized as a National Historical - Cultural Relic; in 2010, the People's Committee of Nghe An province issued a decision allowing the pagoda to be restored.
Currently, the pagoda is planned to be built on an area of 14 hectares and the construction is expected to be divided into phases such as reinforcing the upper hall, the monk's house, the worshiping house, the Buddha statue at the foot of the mountain, the stone path up the mountain, phase 2 to build the Tam Bao, the lecture hall, the festival yard, the bell tower, and renovating the caves into places of worship and pilgrimage. In 2011, the Provincial People's Committee issued a decision to approve Venerable Thich Thanh Tam (born in 1986) as the abbot of Co Am pagoda. Since then, the pagoda has organized for thousands of Buddhists to participate in activities on the main holidays of Buddha and participate in charitable activities in the province.
After the Vu Lan ceremony with the "rose pinned on the shirt" ritual to express gratitude for the birth and upbringing of ancestors, grandparents, parents, the venerable monks and nuns performed a ceremony to pour bronze to cast the great bell. The great bell is 1.8 m high, 1.2 m in diameter, and weighs 1,000 kg, crafted by artisans from Thua Thien Hue. The cost of casting the Great Bell was donated by the family of Mr. Hoang Cong Tu and Ms. Vu Thi Minh (Hanoi City) along with contributions from businesses, local people and tourists from all over.
In addition to the Vu Lan ceremony to show gratitude to parents and cast the great bell, the pagoda also holds prayers for national peace and prosperity, and to honor the heroic martyrs.
