On this occasion, Ms. Irina Bokova, Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) sent a message to member countries, affirming that books are the greatest invention of mankind. Books help people exchange ideas and knowledge endlessly, without being limited by time, space and geographical location.
Nowadays, with the emergence of digital libraries, people have more opportunities to access knowledge, but this type still cannot surpass the great values of traditional printed books.
Ms. Bokova emphasized that the annual celebration of “World Book and Copyright Day” is an opportunity for everyone to think and find more effective ways to continue to disseminate knowledge through books and newspapers, and how to make books and newspapers accessible to everyone, creating a habit of reading for everyone, widely accessing publishers, bookstores, libraries and schools. In addition, everyone needs to be responsible for protecting and enriching the centuries-old development of books, as well as the intangible values of humanity.
According to Ms. Bokova, the diversity of printed books has turned books into the most effective means of exchanging knowledge, culture and understanding among peoples and communities. She called on UNESCO member countries to have appropriate policies to protect and develop the diversity of books, as well as authors, so that books can continuously develop in both quantity and quality, forever being a companion, the most effective means to help people achieve the goal of becoming rich without limits in knowledge, culture and common understanding among peoples./.
