This year's climate change resolution was co-authored by Vietnam, the Philippines and Bangladesh.
The resolution focuses on the impact of climate change on the enjoyment of rights of migrants and people moving across borders; calls on countries to enact policies to respond to climate change in accordance with the United Nations Convention on Climate Change; decides to organize a dialogue on the topic “Human rights, climate change, migrants and people moving across borders” to contribute to the intergovernmental negotiation process of the Global Package on Migration in December 2017; requests the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to study this topic and report to the 37th Session of the Human Rights Council.
This year's resolution continues to contribute to the work of the Human Rights Council on human rights in the context of the adverse impacts of climate change.
In addition to the three co-author countries, nearly 50 countries participated in sponsoring this resolution.
Many other draft resolutions/decisions were also adopted by consensus by the Human Rights Council related to anti-discrimination, elimination of violence against women and girls, right to education, youth and human rights, migrants...
In addition, eight resolutions must be adopted by vote, on the human rights situation or technical assistance in specific countries (Syria, Belarus, Ukraine) or on specific issues on which the international community has not yet reached a common understanding.
The Vietnamese delegation actively contributed to the discussions at the session. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Duong Chi Dung, Head of the Vietnamese Mission in Geneva, and members of the Vietnamese delegation made many statements at the discussion sessions on various issues; emphasizing that the Human Rights Council should strive to promote dialogue and constructive cooperation, and persistently seek balanced and satisfactory solutions to disagreements.
The Vietnamese delegation also participated in many joint statements of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Francophone Group and the group of like-minded countries at discussion sessions on issues of common concern.
At this session, Vietnam co-sponsored resolutions on the contribution of development to the enjoyment of human rights and the elimination of discrimination against leprosy patients and their families.
Vietnam, in collaboration with Australia, Germany, Madagascar and Fiji, successfully organized a side event on the theme "Promoting and protecting the rights of coastal women in the context of climate change," attracting the participation of more than 50 representatives from countries, United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations.
