UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern about the escalation of tensions in southwestern Syria.

In a statement on June 22, UN Secretary-General spokesman Stephane Dujarric stressed that attacks on both land and air have displaced thousands of civilians, most of whom are moving towards the Jordanian border.

According to the United Nations, clashes have been taking place in recent days in many towns in the east and west of Daraa province in the context of the Syrian government's determination to regain control of southern areas from rebels.

Statistics show that fighting in Daraa province on June 20 left at least 20 people dead, including 11 in Daraa city, and many others injured.

According to spokesman Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General also expressed concern that the fighting would pose great risks to regional security, and called for an immediate halt to the current military escalation, urging all parties to respect their commitments under international law and international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

On the same day, according to a VNA correspondent at the United Nations, UN spokesman Farhan Haq said the United Nations was also concerned about information about two consecutive car bombings in Idlib city, northwestern Syria, killing eight people, including one child, and injuring 40 others.

Speaking at a daily press briefing at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Mr. Haq said the United Nations strongly condemned attacks on civilians, aid workers and humanitarian infrastructure.

According to him, there are currently about 2.5 million people living in rebel-controlled Idlib province in northwestern Syria - where half of the population has been displaced by violence and is in dire need of humanitarian aid./.
