United Nations adopts post-2015 agenda
(Baonghean.vn)- On August 2, all 193 member states of the United Nations agreed on a sustainable development agenda for the world over the next 15 years, with the goal of leaving no country behind. The agenda will be officially adopted at a summit of world leaders in September.

After two final weeks of negotiations and several overnight sessions, the 17-goal sustainable development agenda, along with a declaration of implementation and assessment by countries, was agreed upon and replaced the eight Millennium Development Goals.
Diplomats welcomed the adoption of the agenda, with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calling the adoption “historic” and warning of the hard work ahead.
“The sheer scale, depth and complexity of the agenda will be a huge challenge for all of us, for the United Nations” – Ban Ki-moon.
The 8 Millennium Development Goals have focused on meeting the needs and development of poor countries over the past 15 years. The Sustainable Development Goals will focus on ending poverty, reducing inequality within and between countries, realizing and achieving gender equality, improving water and energy resources, and taking action against climate change.
According to analysts, meeting all of the above goals will cost a lot of money. According to estimates, the cost of implementing the program is between 3.3 trillion USD and 4.5 trillion USD per year in spending, investment and state aid, a huge amount equivalent to the 2016 US federal budget of 3.8 trillion USD.
More than 100 countries agreed at a meeting in Ethiopia last month to finance sustainable development goals by mobilizing domestic resources such as taxes, boosting private investment and redirecting foreign aid.
World leaders will gather from September 25 to 27 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA to formally adopt this new sustainable development agenda. Pope Francis will also address the UN before the summit begins.
