(Baonghean.vn) - In a resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council on Friday, March 27, the United Nations announced that it would support the fight against the extremist Islamic jihadists IS in Libya. Although supporting the Libyan government, the United Nations will not lift the arms embargo currently imposed on this country.
According to the resolution adopted by the Security Council on March 27, all 15 members "expressed strong support for the efforts of the Libyan government in the fight against IS" and Al-Qaeda branches but at the same time rejected the proposal to buy more military equipment proposed by the Libyan government.

It is known that not long ago, the Libyan government proposed to buy more military equipment to deal with the development of IS terrorist groups as well as to strengthen its army. Although rejecting this proposal, the Security Council still agreed to soon reconsider the request to cancel the arms embargo on Libya.
Explaining their decision, the Security Council members said they were concerned that the weapons supplied to the Libyan government would fall into the hands of bad guys or arms smugglers. Instead of providing more weapons, the Security Council wanted Libya to form a national unity government. British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant explained that the absence of a strong and united government would only cause Libya to sink deeper into chaos.
In addition to expressing support for the Libyan government, the resolution also stressed the Council’s “deep concern” over the growing presence of IS in Libya and the growing allegiance of Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups to IS. The Council threatened sanctions against individuals or entities that provide financial support, recruitment or propaganda to IS and terrorist groups.
In parallel with the above resolution, the Security Council also passed another resolution authorizing the establishment of a United Nations Support Mission in Libya (MANUL). Accordingly, MANUL will operate until September 15 with the main task of being an intermediary agency to help Libyan parties establish a national unity government, thereby ending the conflict that has lasted for several years in this country.
