European Union strives to find solution to Greek public debt problem

The EU will continue its efforts to resolve Greece's public debt in order to bring about a good outcome for all Europeans, the Greek Finance Minister said.

“Europe will continue to consider ways to increase the chances and bring a good result for all Europeans, not just the Greek people,” Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on February 17. “We know that Europe will find a good solution, a solution that will help Greece and its creditors overcome the remaining disagreements.”

The Greek Finance Minister also expressed hope that the European Union and Greece will find consensus at the next meeting between the bloc and Greece on February 20.

Earlier, in the early morning of February 17, Vietnam time, the meeting between the Eurozone Finance Ministers and Greece ended in Belgium but failed to reach a final agreement on the Greek bailout program after Greece rejected the draft proposed by the Eurozone.

According to analysts, the reason the negotiations between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' government and the Eurozone appear to have reached a dead end is because Greece insists on abandoning the conditions imposed by the Troika of creditors on the bailout packages worth a total of 240 billion euros granted since 2010 to avoid Greece falling into bankruptcy.

Prime Minister Tsipras wants more time to implement his own reform plan. In contrast, the Eurozone believes that Greece cannot unilaterally overcome the bailout program that expires on February 28 and will only agree to extend the bailout if Greece continues to implement austerity policies./.
