Syrian opposition coalition determined to remove President Assad

The US-led group of “Friends of Syria” has agreed that President Bashar al-Assad and his family will not play any role in the country’s future, said Ahmad Jarba, chairman of the Syrian opposition National Coalition (NC), on January 12.

However, Mr. Jarba did not say whether the NC would participate in peace talks with representatives of the Assad regime scheduled to take place next week in Geneva (Geneva 2 conference).

In a statement issued at the end of the conference earlier in the day, the Friends of Syria group urged the NC to respond positively to the invitation of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to send a delegation to attend the Geneva II conference.

NC had previously said they would make a decision on the matter on January 17./.
