On May 1, medical sources and witnesses said that the Arab coalition fighting the Houthi rebels in Yemen mistakenly carried out an airstrike on a residential area in the capital Sanaa the night before, killing at least 21 civilians.
According to local residents, the Saudi-led coalition bombed the densely populated Sawan area at midnight, causing extensive damage, including nine houses being completely destroyed. A medical worker said that in addition to the 21 people killed, including eight from the same family, 11 people were injured. Rescue teams are currently searching for survivors.
The airstrikes on the night of April 30 also targeted military positions and Houthi gunmen gathered in the suburbs of Sanaa, as well as the Dailamy military airport. Meanwhile, warplanes of the Arab coalition attacked a series of military bases under the control of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthi forces in the provinces of Saada, al-Hodayda, Taiz, Amran and Marib. In Marib and Taiz alone, clashes between Houthi rebels and tribal gunmen continued, but there were no reports of casualties.
According to statistics from the Yemeni government, since the conflict and airstrikes broke out in the country at the end of March, the number of casualties nationwide has reached more than 1,000 dead and more than 3,000 injured. Last week, Saudi Arabia announced a halt to airstrikes after eliminating the Houthi threat to the region, but coalition warplanes continue to conduct operations in Yemen./.
