By installing a device to steal account information, Ngo Van Tong "extorted" money from ATMs.

According to investigation documents: Early in the morning of August 29, 2012, Ngo Van Tong (born in 1981, Chinese nationality) was caught red-handed by the Khuong Trung Ward Police, Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi, while he was struggling to dismantle devices to copy credit card data at the ATM of Dong A Joint Stock Commercial Bank (361 Truong Chinh Street, Hanoi).

Searching the hotel where Tong rented, the police seized an ATM card printer, a small battery with adhesive tape, 11 different sized papers printed with VISA, Mastercard, Card, JCB, UnionPay logos, along with a drill, soldering machine, scissors, files, silicon hot glue sticks...

At the investigation agency, Tong said: I only followed the instructions of a person named Ho Tu (Chinese nationality).

Tong met Ho Tu online in July 2012. This man showed Tong how to “scrape” money from ATMs and invited him to join.

According to the discussion, Ho Tu brought a card data theft device (card skimming device, installed on the ATM card slot), a camera to record pin code entry, an ATM card printing device, 20 blank magnetic card blanks... from China to Vietnam.

Ho Tu would install devices to steal information on ATMs, while Tong would remove these devices and bring them back for his accomplices to exploit and use as fake ATM cards. The "ringleader" told Tong that if he was discovered, he should say that he saw the ATM device fall while withdrawing money and then dial 110 to report it to the authorities.

On August 22, 2012, Tu and Tong entered Vietnam and rented a room at a hotel on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street, Hanoi. They spent three days observing many ATMs and aimed at the ATM of Dong A Joint Stock Commercial Bank on Truong Chinh Street.

Tu and Tong installed devices to steal account information twice. At noon on August 26, 2012, Tu went to the ATM and installed devices to steal customer account information. That same evening, Tong removed the devices Tu had installed.

With the stolen credit card data and passwords, the couple created five fake credit cards. However, all of these cards were “swallowed” by the ATM. Not giving up, at around 1 p.m. on August 28, 2012, Tu returned to the ATM on Truong Chinh Street to install a device to steal credit card information. The next morning, Tong removed the device and took it home to make fake cards, but was caught red-handed.

When he learned that Song was arrested, Ho Tu fled, taking with him a personal computer that contained the software program running the Skimming device.

Faced with evidence of the crime, testimony at the investigation agency and at the trial on July 10, the People's Court sentenced Tong to 30 months in prison./.
