According to the Globe and Mail, the sniper used a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle from a distance of 3.45 km.
At such a long distance, the bullet would have had to travel 10 seconds before reaching its target and taking out the Islamic State militant. This impressive feat was verified by video and cross-referenced with data obtained by the Canadian military.
The commander did not name the sniper for security reasons.
